About CMS

The Center for Molecular Systems Science (CMS) was established in 2010 to sustain the development of molecular systems science research initiated by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology’s Global COE Center, "Future Molecular Systems Science" (2007–2011). This initiative, led by the Department of Applied Chemistry at the Faculty of Engineering, aimed to create a globally recognized research hub in the field.
With the goal of pioneering the academic field of "molecular systems science"—which serves as the foundation for next-generation chemistry involving molecules, substances, and materials—CMS strives to advance groundbreaking, original, and cutting-edge research at the highest international standards. Through these efforts, the center seeks to establish itself as a world-leading institution for education and research, positioning Kyushu University at the forefront of the next generation of scientific innovation.

In 2012, CMS underwent expansion and reorganization (adding two associate professors and three assistant professors) following its adoption under the University Reform and Revitalization System. It has since progressed through multiple phases: the second phase (2012–2013), the third phase (2013–2017, as a Leading Academic Research Center), and the fourth phase (2018–2019). In 2020, CMS was again selected for the University Reform and Revitalization System, leading to another reorganization and the establishment of the Information Science Department (including one associate professor). Currently, CMS is operating in its fifth phase.
