Professor Kimizuka's research interests are in molecular self-assembling phenomena widely from synthetic organic, inorganic and biomolecules. He is currently focused on the development of molecular systems chemistry and recent research topic includes: exciton coupling & energy migration in molecular self-assemblies, self-assembling organic/inorganic nanowires, nanoparticles and nanocapsules; molecular self-assembly and interfacial nanomaterials synthesis in ionic liquids; self-assembly of biological molecules such as nucleotides, peptides and proteins, and creation of dissipative nanostructures. In 2007, he was appointed as a project leader of JST CREST “Integration of Self-Assembly Strategies for the Construction of Smart Nanointerfaces”. In his CREST project, development of ferroelectric nanomaterials and new surface nanoarchitectures for creating interfacial functions were explored. In 2012, he steped into the new field of triplet chemistry in self-assemblies and developed a wide range of supramolecular photon upconversion systems which are based on efficient triplet energy migration among self-organized chromophoric systems.
